About the speaker

Commissioner Buchanan’s role is to oversee policies and practices affecting the safety and wellbeing of Victorian children and young people, particularly those experiencing vulnerability through interactions with the child protection and youth justice systems. Previous roles include leading the Federation of Community Legal Centres, peak body for Victoria’s community legal centres, and the Office of Correctional Services Review, where Liana was responsible for oversight of Victoria’s corrections system. Improving responses to family violence has been a focus of many of Liana’s roles since she started her career as a Women’s Legal Service lawyer.

Liana’s address highlighted the need for a nuanced and balanced approach between harm reduction and considering vulnerabilities and developmental needs of young people using violence in the home.
