ABC – Positive connections building thriving futures | Quantum Support Services

The Adolescent Building Connections (ABC) program is an evidence based, trauma informed program delivered in a group work format developed and operating since 2016. The program works in partnership with local secondary schools to support adolescents to understand their decision making and choices, supporting their journey and building a toolbox with strategies to make positive choices within their relationships.

The ABC program combines interactive activities specifically designed to meet the needs of adolescents to deepen understanding and build on the foundation of the established respectful relationships program. This provides an open and safe discussion space to encourage engagement and wider thinking outside what the young person may have experienced to this point within their life. The program supports an environment of connection before correction.

Facilitators challenge current ways of thinking and encourage participants to accept responsibility for their choices and behaviour, while learning new ways to manage difficult emotions and make positive choices. This approach supports young people to explore their individual journey of emotional and behavioural discovery. Facilitators provide opportunity, space and knowledge to support the young person to build their toolbox. This in turn builds resilience and feelings of improved belonging and self-worth.

Young people in rural and regional areas are often impacted by limited access to services and supports. With Gippsland experiencing high levels of disadvantage including family violence. This program meets the young people where they are at. Being accessible through the place based approach enables facilitators to support otherwise isolated young people unable to attend build their social connections and understanding of positive relationships to ensure healthy and sustainable relationships.

This is imperative to the success of the program.
The ABC program in conjunction with the traditional respectful relationships curriculum positions our young people to be able to break the cycle of disruptive behaviour, poor decision making and improve their connection to family, peers and the wider community. Building capacity to maintain strong connected positive relationships in their life.
