At this event the Family Violence Sexual Violence (FVSV) Knowledge Hub was launched after twelve months of work. Special thanks to all partners Safe & Equal, No to Violence, SASVic, and CFECFW for their collaboration in developing and launching the FVSV Knowledge Hub. To celebrate the occasion, key experts were invited to present on their important work to deliver better outcomes for children, young people and families affected by family and sexual violence.

Presented at the OPEN Symposium 2023, this presentation shares the perspectives of young survivors within the context of family violence support. It emphasises the importance of children’s voices, delving into the insights shared by those who have directly experienced family violence, and recognising them as experts through their lived experiences. The session highlights key research findings, focusing on the fundamental principles that underpin effective support for young survivors, all grounded in a children’s rights-based approach.

Hosted by the Centre, The ‘Children’s Voices for Change’ research project aimed to improve the sector’s collective understanding of the diverse experiences of children affected by family violence and understand the effectiveness of services in meeting their needs. It supports women in their journey to understand the negative impacts of family violence on themselves as individuals and in their role of mother.
Kids First Australia | 2020
This presentation provides an overview of the Caring Dads Program, which is a 17-week intervention program for men who have abused or neglected their children or exposed them to family violence. The program was delivered by Kids First in partnership with Uniting ReGen and Anglicare Victoria.

Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) | 2021
Domestic and family violence (DFV) is a contributor to disease burden (illness, disability and premature death) among Australian women, with mental health conditions making up the largest proportion of this DFV burden. Research has found that mental health intersects with DFV in complex ways. Mental ill health can be brought on by DFV, can compound the effects of DFV, can act as a barrier to reporting or accessing support during or after DFV, or can be used as a tool against women by perpetrators of DFV. Drawing from the evidence base, this expert panel explored this issue and discussed a move towards a collaborative approach to mental health policy and practice.

In 2022, No to Violence and YSAS partnered to create training that combines family violence prevention, men’s behavior change and youth substance use expertise. The presentation covers their collaboration, key lessons and the importance of early intervention in preventing intimate partner and family violence.

This webinar highlights the often-subtle ways in which people using violence can enact harm. The webinar explores ways that services can use the language of coercive control to support women to expose patterns of abusive behaviour and encourages recognition of forms of violence that are not physical or sexual.
ANROWS | 2020
There has been little examination of the connection between gambling and coercive control and economic abuse. This research looks at the the relationship between gambling and intimate partner violence against women. The authors found that while gambling does not directly cause IPV, it exacerbates it in serious ways, and that economic abuse is highly prevalent among women experiencing gambling-related intimate partner violence.
