Presentation by Georginia Dimopoulos, Southern Cross University, and Emma Nugent, the Centre, as part of a family violence and sexual violence series.
The Centre, in partnership with No to Violence, Safe and Equal, and Sexual Assault Services Victoria are working in collaboration to support better outcomes for family violence and sexual violence service users as well as family service providers. This project will strengthen practice, identify data gaps and build an evidence base in this sector. As part of the collaboration project, OPEN will be facilitating a series of events.
The first event of the series featured two presentations and provided evidence from children and young people who have experiences of the family violence service system. Additionally, this event launched a resource designed to empower family violence professionals in the child and family services sector.

Dr Georgina Dimopoulos
Dr Georgina Dimopoulos is a Senior Lecturer in Law and a Research Associate of the Centre for Children and Young People at Southern Cross University. She researches across the areas of family law, children’s rights and family violence, with a focus on strengthening children’s meaningful, safe participation in decision-making processes. Her first book, Decisional Privacy and the Rights of the Child (Routledge, 2022), presents a new model for enabling and listening to children’s voices in decision-making.
Ms Emma Nugent
As a Project Officer at the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, Emma’s current role is focused on building sector capacity around MARAM and the Information Sharing Schemes for the Child and Family Services sector. She also supports the Adolescents & Young Persons Using Violence in the Home (AVITH) Practice Leadership Project. Through these roles, Emma seeks to help ensure research and data is accessible and that service agencies have the space and capacity to build the evidence base together. Emma holds degrees in political science and social policy. She has a strong interest in the rights of children and young people, and ensuring access to services and supports is equitable for all.
