Family Violence & Sexual Violence Event (FV&SV)
This interactive online event, the second of the series, was facilitated by Emerging Minds, offered insight into how family and domestic violence and abuse may be affecting children’s health, development and wellbeing.
Practitioners from specialist and non-specialist programs will likely come into contact with families who have been or are currently impacted by family and domestic violence and abuse. Therefore, it’s crucial for professionals to have the skills and confidence to discuss with parents how such situations impact children’s health, development, and overall wellbeing. We know that children will be impacted by family and domestic violence even if they are not subjected to abuse or witness it directly.

This online event was particularly valuable to those designing and leading child and family programs and for passionate-change makers wanting to better embed children’s social and emotional wellbeing in their organisational advocacy and strategy.
The Family Violence & Sexual Violence Knolwedge (FV&SV) Hub Project
The Centre, in collaboration with No to Violence, Safe and Equal, and Sexual Assault Services Victoria are working on the Family Violence and Sexual Violence Knowledge Hub Project. The project aims to support children and families experiencing family violence and family violence service users. The project will strengthen practice, identify data gaps and build an evidence base in this sector. As part of the collaboration project, the Centre will be hosting a series three online events.
For over 20 years Emerging Minds has been dedicated to advancing the mental health and emotional wellbeing of Australian infants, children, adolescents and their families. Emerging Minds is federally funded to lead the National Workforce Centre for Child Mental Health providing workforce development products and resources that aim to support professionals and organisations to improve social and emotional wellbeing and mental health outcomes for children (0-12 years).
Afra Durance is the Child Mental Health Advisor for the Social Services team within Emerging Minds Partnerships and Implementation Team. Afra has over 15 years’ experience focused on promotion, prevention, and early intervention approaches to strengthening children’s mental health and wellbeing across the health, education, and community services sectors.
Jade Pynakker is the Engagement Officer for the Social Services, Partnerships and Implementation team for Emerging Minds. Jade has worked for over 8 years in mental health and not-for-profit environments supporting service delivery across child, family and adult mental health and wellbeing.
