The online Symposium was held from 22nd – 25th October 2024.

The recent OPEN Symposium 2024 was an engaging event, showcasing the latest in research, practice, and advocacy around children’s wellbeing and family services. Over three days, the symposium highlighted the importance of centering youth voices, strengthening community support, and advancing evidence-based practices.

The first two days of the Symposium featured thought-provoking discussions and expert insights into key challenges and innovations in child and family services.

Day 1: Hearing from Young People & Early Intervention

  • Keynote: Professor Ann Sanson on climate change and its impact on children’s well-being and resilience
  • Early Intervention & Parenting: Practical strategies to support families facing complex challenges
  • Youth Safety & Participation: Safe Steps shared global insights on protecting young people and empowering their voices

Day 2: Cultural Safety & Out-of-Home Care

  • Online Safety & Tech-Facilitated Abuse: Gulsum Adas (not recorded) explored emerging risks and protection strategies
  • First Nations Perspectives: VACCA led discussions on cultural safety and supporting Aboriginal families
  • Supporting Children in Care: A focus on disability-inclusive models and strengthening care systems

This symposium brought together over 600 attendees, fostering connections and sharing knowledge to drive impactful changes for children and families. Thank you to all keynote speakers, sponsors, presenters, and attendees for making this event a success.
