The online Symposium was held from 22nd – 25th October 2024.
The recent OPEN Symposium 2024 was an engaging event, showcasing the latest in research, practice, and advocacy around children’s wellbeing and family services. Over three days, the symposium highlighted the importance of centering youth voices, strengthening community support, and advancing evidence-based practices.
Day 1 focussed on the themes of client and youth voices, early intervention, and parenting support. Professor Ann Sanson delivered a keynote on the impacts of climate change on children’s mental health, emphasising the need to hear and prioritise young people’s perspectives in policies and support systems. The day also included sessions on empowering young people and families through early intervention programs, with discussions on nurturing safe, supportive environments that encourage resilience. Presenters shared insights into how listening to youth and parents can drive better outcomes, particularly in vulnerable communities.
Day 2 addressed critical areas of Out-of-Home Care and “building the Aboriginal evidence base.” A highlight was Gulsum Adas’ keynote, where she explored the growing issue of tech-facilitated abuse against children, equipping attendees with strategies and practical resources for online safety and support. The day also included discussions on enhancing support for Aboriginal communities, with presentations focusing on culturally responsive practices and strengthening evidence to inform effective services. Sessions on Out-of-Home Care provided strategies for supporting young people in care and those with a care experience, emphasising collaboration across sectors.
Day 3 was our youth focussed day. For more information and the recordings of all sessions, head over to our Youth Day event page! Ticket holders will get exclusive access to recordings.
This symposium brought together over 600 attendees, fostering connections and sharing knowledge to drive impactful changes for children and families. Thank you to all keynote speakers, sponsors, presenters, and attendees for making this event a success.
